The problem of what will happen to pets after their owners` deaths is a poignant issue, particularly for elderly people. A pioneering program has been started by Texas A&M University through which a pet owner can establish a charitable trust, with the university`s foundation as remainder beneficiary.
Interest from the trust will provide support for the animal and, after the pet`s death, the principal creates a perpetual endowment in the donor`s name to fund animal-health studies, provide scholarships and develop new programs at the A&M veterinary school.
A few SPCAs offer similar services. Check them out. At the very least, you should have a will that stipulates what will happen to your pets after your death.
