I resent the cynical criticism of the Hands Across America project made by Christopher M. Webb of Evanston in your June 6 issue.
He stated that, ” . . . it illustrates the poor social consciousness of Americans.” He continued, ”No longer are Americans generous or charitable on their own part.”
In reality, this outpouring of altruistic Americans of all ages, all creeds and all colors united us in our efforts to help the needy people in our country.
I know–I was there at Harlem and Grand, proudly and joyfully wearing my
”Hands Across America” T-shirt as an outward expression of my inner desire to join in this worthwhile cause.
I was angry when I first read Christopher M. Webb`s letter. Now I feel sorry for him in his narrow-minded, condescending sophistication.
As for the effects ”being transient,” this 78-year-old grandmother will long remember the heartening togetherness felt as I stood with a kind nun and a beautiful young mother and daughter as we raised our hands and sang
”America the Beautiful.”
