John G. Heimann, former U.S. comptroller of the currency, told a Tokyo business group the world economy faces the failure of a number of banks and financial institutions. He expressed concern about the ability of governments to deal with a major collapse affecting world money markets. ”Many of today`s intermediaries will disappear because they are not able to keep up with the competitive chase,” said Heimann, Merrill Lynch & Co. vice chairman.
