I was appalled to read (in your article of June 17) of the Archdiocese of Chicago`s plan to bury and sod the monuments of St. James` Cemetery. When the convenience of a golf course ”look” is preferable to the preservation of this historic cemetery, it indicates a corruption of values and a blatant disrespect for the dead and their contributions to our history.

To apply the policies of modern cemetery management that insist on the elimination of ”all extraneous plantings and plot borders” to a cemetery over 100 years old is inappropriate and illogical. Certainly the preservation of these irreplaceable, historic and significant monuments is more important than a featureless, manicured lawn.
