I read with much amazement ”The trouble with a gay rights law” in The Tribune. Amazement in that usually The Tribune presents an educated point of view. There is a radical difference between ”orientation” and
”preference.” Orientation is what you refer to as one of ”the accidents of birth.” Preference is a developed or acquired taste, or again in your words, ”an individual choice.”
Homosexuality is an orientation, not a preference. Realistically speaking, in a society such as ours which degrades and abuses homosexuals, no one would ”choose” to be a homosexual. Beyond the realistic, the research of credible individuals such as Dr. Alan Bell, or institutions such as the Kinsey Institute, reveals that sexual orientation is not a matter of personal choice. This being the case; your editorial was poorly researched, did a disservice to people attempting to secure their basic rights, and misled the public. Your error demands immediate correction.
