Steve Cauthen, who won two Eclipse Awards in America and the 1978 Triple Crown with Affirmed, may be returning from England to ride the Irish horse Theatrical in the Budweiser-Arlington Million.
Michael Kinane, the Irish jockey champion for the last two years, was scheduled to make his American debut aboard the 4-year-old colt in the Aug. 31 international race. But both of Kinane`s wrists were broken in a spill Tuesday night at Wexford, and he is expected to be out of action for six or eight weeks.
Theatrical`s trainer, Dermot Weld, hopes to substitute Cauthen, last year`s champion jockey in England.
Cauthen has had four Million rides. He was 11th with Fingal`s Cave in 1981, third with Motavato in 1982, 14th with The Noble Player in 1983 and 12th with Free Guest last year.
— Thursday`s Festival program will showcase fillies and mares 3 years old and up in the Grade II $75,000-added Modesty Stakes. Heading the field for the 1 1/16-mile grass race is Park Appeal, a stakes winner from Europe who was moved to California in May by her owner, Sheikh Maktoum al Maktoum. Competing with Park Appeal for the favorite`s role will be Mountain Bear.
