Bob Greene`s article in the Aug. 10 Tribune concedes in the second paragraph that Thomas Eagleton, now retiring, ”helped to stop the war in Vietnam.” The balance of the piece is devoted to Eagleton`s mental illness and its impact on his political career.

I would not have voted for Eagleton in any case, but fair is fair. This would have been a chance to remind people of Eagleton`s positive

contributions; but no, this reporter wastes 14 inches of column on material appealing only to the most maudlin interests. He missed a splendid opportunity to correct old hurts and give Eagleton proper respect at his retirement.
