American Stores Co. said it expects to report a decrease in second-quarter earnings and a flat pretax performance. The Salt Lake City-based firm, parent of Jewel Food stores, said it expects to report earnings in the range of 82 to 87 cents a share for the second quarter ended Aug. 2, down from $1.12 a share in the year-earlier period.
