I would like to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Andrew Davis for his article ”A first-hand lesson from Chernobyl” (Voice of the people, Aug. 11). Dr. Davis` lesson was well presented, but what is left for the rest of us is to learn it. Additional comments to his article:
In general, conventional wars produce both winners and losers, whereas nuclear wars produce only losers. Therefore, why should we fight an unwinnable war? If the price for what is known as ”national interests” or ”national security” is a nuclear war, then the lives of our children are too expensive a price to be paid. I wonder who can afford it?
Dr. Davis concluded by saying, ”The answer is not to add another complicated layer of technology like a Star War shield, but to get rid of the nuclear weapons themselves.” It is important to point out that a workable space-based star wars system requires an additional defense system to defend the earlier from being attacked. And you know what is next . . . another layer of technology!
