”Oddball” is not one of fall`s fashion buzzwords. Even the avant-garde plays a minimal role this season. Clean and classic are the hallmarks; muted grays and earth tones are the leading colors; luxurious is probably the most romantic word–or mood.

That leaves precious little room for fantasy, for clothes that look

”different,” as so many people describe things that are fun to look at but that they wouldn`t wear–until everybody else does.

But all is not gray cashmere out there, especially in cutting-edge stores that carry clothes for women who prefer individuality and being first.

Designers around the world, but particularly in Paris and London, showed a gamut of silhouettes, patterns and colors that will certainly not end up in everyone`s closet this fall, but may very well be the harbingers of what`s to come a season or so ahead. —
