A catalog from the U.S. Consumer Information Center demonstrates that Uncle Sam is still one of the best sources of low-cost guides to do-it-yourself home improvement.

Home improvement offerings in the center`s catalog for this season include ”Simple Home Repairs Inside” ($1.75, No. 141P), a manual on repairing and replacing faucets, electrical plugs, screens and tiles, and

”Simple Home Repairs Outside” ($2, No. 142P), a manual on repairing roofs, doors, windows, porches, steps and sidewalks.

There`s also ”Painting–Inside and Out” ($1.50, No. 139P), which gives directions for surface preparation, paint selection, application and use of natural finishes to ensure a superior paint job.

Residents of older houses might be interested in ”Aluminum and Vinyl Siding on Historic Buildings” ($1, No. 135P) or ”The Repair of Historic Wooden Windows” ($1, No. 140P), which both focus on projects that achieve energy efficiency and enhance appearance.

Other do-it-yourself guides to energy conservation are ”Landscaping to Cut Fuel Costs” (50 cents, No. 437P) and ”Solar Greenhouses and Sunspaces” ($2.25, No. 132P).

To order booklets, send check or money order made out to ”Superintendent of Documents” to: R. Woods, Consumer Information Center-Y, P.O. Box 100, Pueblo, Colo. 81002.
