Al Oerter turns 50 Friday. The discus star first won an Olympic medal in the 1956 Games in Melbourne and he wants to adda fifth gold in the 1988 competition in South Korea.
”I`m making some allowances for my age, by cutting down on my body weight,” Oerter said. ”I`ve cut down on calories and cut out caffeine.
”It`ll be interesting to see how I do next year with the reduced weight,” he said. ”That`s when I`m going to really start cranking it up for the `88 Games.
After winning the 1956 gold with a throw of 184-11, he went on to win golds in 1960 in Rome at 194-2, 1964 in in Tokyo at 200-1, and 1968 in Mexico City at 212-6.
