The school year in Chicago has begun on a calm note, for which we are all grateful. The absence of a threat of a teachers` strike is certainly a big factor, but my satisfaction extends toward another dimension, leadership. It is refreshing that Dr. Manford Byrd quietly and without fanfare is handling the awesome responsiblities of the office of general superintendent with dignity and poise.

It is a relief that he chooses to project a distinctive ”low-key”

profile rather than one that is constroversial and publicity seeking. This type of image, together with his back-to-basics philosophy, will enhance the educational atmosphere in our city.
