The 1986 Mike Royko Ribfest is being held in Grant Park on Sunday. Some participants will be setting up their grills as early as 7 a.m. More than 600 entrants will participate, and winners will be chosen for best rib, best sauce and best overall. Preliminary judging will start at 2:30 p.m. The finals will be around 5 p.m.
For those who come out to observe this, one of the largest barbecue events anywhere, Oak Park rib restaurateur Charlie Robinson–who won the first Ribfest–will have a stand set up to sell his product. But it is said that getting a taste from competitors at large is no problem. ”This is one of the largest mooching events in the city`s history,” said an anonymous someone involved in organizing the Ribfest.
