I must register dismay at the twisted reasoning of many people who oppose replacing straight welfare with a workfare program because it is a
”punishment for being poor.” Let it be known that poverty by itself is enough of a punishment. Workfare undoubtedly would help relieve the stigma of welfare, at least by restoring some self-respect to the victims who depend solely on their welfare assistance to get by. Honest toil can and does provide some hope for the future.
