The Daniloff-Zakharov trade off will do nothing to stop the Soviets from unjustly arresting and intimidating our reporters–especially those who ask embarrassing questions and dig beyond the surface for the real truth. In fact, trading Gennady Zakharov for Nicholas Daniloff may even encourage more Soviet espionage.
The United States would be wise to do whatever is necessary to free Nicholas Daniloff completely, but then we should call home all Americans, including our entire ambassadorial staff. When they are all safe at home, we should withdraw all diplomatic immunity from all Russians in the United States.
I believe they would soon get the right idea.
