Ms. Quindlen, in her piece (Oct. 14) on motherhood, traveled both sides of the career vs. the home issue well; but she failed to cite the chief cause of maternal hardship–the overwhelming, ever-present responsibility for another human being`s emotional and physical welfare. No matter what a woman`s mothering modus, she can`t escape sharing her child`s needs, fears, hurts and joys. What`s ”his” becomes ”ours.”

A mother is hooked-in for life. If you don`t believe me, the next time you hear a kid call out ”Mom,” count the number of female heads (all ages) that instantly turn.
