You are mistaken in thinking parents who object to using texts which contain ”secular humanism” can have their children avoid such texts and learn to read at home.

The reading you envision might be useful in following directions to put together a Tinker-Toy, but in no way is it reading in the fullest sense.

To read means to be able to understand allusions: historical ones, literary ones, scientific ones.

How could a child raised on a diet of expurgated prose learn to really read?
