In Indianapolis a firm is reminding local viewers via its television commercials that the holiday season is approaching and it`s time to buy handguns for stocking stuffers–or perhaps a larger gun for protecting oneself against muggers and the like.

The American way–a toy pistol for junior and a tommygun for Dad makes for a Merry Christmas.

Since Jan. 1 of this year, 19,898 Hoosiers have purchsed ”unlimited”

permits to pack a piece. In 1985, 50,003 Hoosiers joined the ranks of arms-carriers. To get a permit to carry a rod, they only had to declare they wanted to carry a gun for ”self-protection” and plunk down $25.

Statistics show that most guns in the home wind up killing or maiming a member of the family, a friend or an innocent bystander–instead of stopping a burglar or intruder, as was the orginal purpose. So if Old Saint Nick doesn`t complete his rounds this Christmas, you may know the reason why.
