George Burns and Gracie Allen wrote such tight material that their old routines read as well as they played. In ”Say Goodnight, Gracie!” (E.P. Dutton), Cheryl Blythe and Susan Sackett resurrect some of the comedians`
classic dialogues. Gracie: ”Where are you going?” George: ”I`m going down to the store to get some cigars and stamps.” Gracie: ”Oh, who`re you going to mail them to?” George: ”I`m going to smoke them myself. (Long pause)
Aren`t you going to ask me why I`m going to smoke stamps?” Gracie: ”Why should I? I`ve done one or two silly things in my life, too!”
Nobody ever expected Henry
Kissinger to go gentle into that good night that exists outside the State Department, and he hasn`t. Even as a private citizen, he`s still
controversial. In the December Penthouse Kissinger stands by one of his most outrageous pronouncements: ”I have jokingly, but only half-jokingly, presumed to say that Israel ought to offer to join the United Arab Republic as one of its constituent states. I repeat that it was said half-jokingly, but the
(concept) was correct.”
Why is Adam Carrington of ”Dynasty” the man women love to hate? ”It`s the fascination with a really amoral mind,” says Gordon Thomson, who plays A.C. ”It`s a very sexy thing.” Alexis, played by Joan Collins, is one of the show`s most devious characters, but she uses her sense of humor and love for her children to balance her nastiness. What, other than a really terrific wardrobe, does Adam use? ”He`s a very passionate man, and when he loves, he loves deeply,” says Thomson. ”And he was abandoned as a child, (which)
justifies his behavior to a degree. He is aching to belong but doesn`t know how, so he goes about it in the wrong way. He`s a lost soul, and the audience glimpses a terrible vulnerability in this Machiavellian creature.”
