James A. Sammons` defense of outrageous physicians` fees for old people
(Jan. 9, Voice of the people) is characteristic of the self- serving insensitivity so frequently displayed by the American Medical Association.
Sammons states that many Medicare beneficiaries have substantial incomes and, therefore, high fees are justified.
Having established a big, blatant lie, Sammons goes on to hang a specious argument on this falsehood. Of the many senior citizens I am acquainted with (I am one), none has a ”substantial income.” In truth, all lead an existence of precarious economic balance that one large medical bill would immediately destroy.
Whatever the merits or deficiencies of the law he opposes, Sammons` basic premise is, at best, open to challenge, and thus, his argument against the law has no credibility.
