William Raspberry`s thought concerning American schools and those in Japan (Jan. 10) gave me a thought.

If children here spent nine hours a day in school and then had to clean the classrooms, following this with additional hours of homework and frequent weekends in privately run ”cram” schools, would that really be such a bad idea? We might even see a drop in illiteracy, teenage crime and high school pregnancies. They just wouldn`t have time.
