Just a couple of notes on Steve Harrison`s letter and his view that the press has been irresponsible in its coverage of the Iran-arms affair.
Harrison contends that the ”disturbingly unified activist press” has ganged up against Reagan in its coverage and the ideology of the media has gone from ”liberal to leftist.” Nonsense! Apart from a few newspapers in our country, our print media are mainly conservative–remember,
”conservative” means to conserve, or keep things the same.
Most newspapers usually avoid printing many stories that appear anti-Reagan, or anti-American–even if the Nicaraguan revolutionaries supported by Reagan (the contras) are committing inhumane acts and killing some school children now and then, or if we are secretly bombing Honduras (quite a while ago). The newspapers do print these stories now and then, but only when they`re popular enough to be put on the network news.
In their reporting of the arms affair, the print media have gone from conservative to responsible, not from ”liberal to leftist” as Harrison contends.
