I`m neither a creationist nor a scientist, but Paul MacKinney`s letter of Jan. 28, pleading ”equal time” for creation theory in public schools strikes me as a crock of self-serving half-truths and outright lies.
The creationist`s assertion that all they want is ”equal time, not exclusive time” is belied by the fact that as Bible-believing Christians
(fundamentalists), they have to view evolution as heresy, inimical to their beliefs and what they think everybody should believe; a heresy to be rooted out and destroyed.
MacKinney makes an oblique reference to ”secular humanism” being established as a religion, at least in the schools, and the fundamentalists see themselves as being at war with such a doctrine. In light of their constant attempts to censor and ban various schoolbooks and otherwise ”dumb down” our education system, I can`t believe that they are going to settle for ”equal time” for anything they don`t like once they get their way.
The creationists believe that the Earth and cosmos were created 6,000 to 10,000 years ago in a matter of 144 hours. Any methods used by scientists to determine otherwise are at best wrong and at worst ”tricks of Satan.” After we do away with biology, then, we also have to get rid of nuclear physics
(which led to atomic clocks and the carbon-dating process), radio astronomy (which led to the ”Big Bang” theory of the creation of the universe, and which also helps in trying to determine the age of the universe) and other branches of modern science.
