I wonder if the woman who wrote concerning dog shows has ever attended a show. Show dogs are not ”put through paces like a machine,” as she suggests. Rather, they merely move around a ring and are judged on conformation–not on how many tricks they can perform.

True, the dogs don`t care about ribbons and trophies, and yes, winning does make the owners proud. But how is this pride any different than that of a proud parent when a child is recognized for superior performance?

Perhaps a dog would rather have a ”juicy bone” than a well-balanced diet, but how many of us have seen overweight, poorly conditioned dogs

–victims of loving but naive owners. Show dogs are among the best conditioned and cared-for dogs in the world.
