In regard to your March 8 article ”Atom smasher runs race with time” by Jon Van; I agree it is important for the U.S. to maintain its lead in the field of high-energy physics.

However, I am inclined to agree with Dr. Anderson that more money should be put into research which would more directly affect our lives. Waiting a few years for better and less costly technology for the new atom smasher would keep us from spending billions of dollars on an accelerator that would be obsolete before it`s finished.
