Mellon Bank Corp.`s new chairman said he expects the giant Pittsburgh-based bank to return to profitability some time this year. Nathan W. Pearson, a director, took over temporarily as chairman after the resignation last week of J. David Barnes. That resignation followed Mellon`s posting a loss of $60 million in the first quarter, forcing a reduction in its quarterly dividend to 35 cents from 69 cents.
