My congratulations on Carolyn McGuire`s super, complete, in-depth article on Tucson on March 29. She truly ”covered the waterfront” and must have taken copious notes and have a most retentive mind. I cannot think of a single item of interest left uncovered.

BIRNBAUM`S HOTELS

I consider Stephen Birnbaum very knowledgeable and follow his advice a lot (but) I do not understand what his point is in the (April 12) article headlined ”Hotels the Mobil Guide overlooked–and shouldn`t have.”
Of the five he listed, three do have the Five Star Rating. With regard to the Hana-Maui Hotel, the Mobil Guide does not rate Hawaiian establishments at all. I wish they did.
So, only the Meridien in Boston is in dispute.
Mr. Birnbaum completed his list of hotels in the April 19 issue. The headline on the first part was confusing.

After reading Carolyn McGuire`s Feb. 1 story–”Romantic hideaways: A lovers` guide to the Caribbean”–which described the Hotel Manapany on St. Barthelemy (as a romantic hideaway), I looked forward to my visit there in March. However, when I read Robert Lubin`s letter criticizing the hotel in the Feb. 15 Voice of the traveler column, I began to worry.
Having recently returned from six days at the Hotel Manapany, I can only say that it is fantastic and that Mr. Lubin must have stayed at a different hotel than the one I stayed at and the one described in the article. The Manapany is exquisite. The ocean views, the private beach and the pool are unsurpassable.
CADOGAN PRICES

As the U.S. representative of 11 Cadogan Gardens, London, I write to thank you for publishing very complimentary words on the the hotels in Margaret Carlson`s article on small hotels in London (March 1).
There has been some confusion over 1987 rates, which, because of the falling dollar, were misleading in the article.
Figuring the pound at $1.66, the rates for singles are $106 to $140, doubles/twins are $156 to $205. Suites begin at $240. (Heathrow Airport collection by chauffeured Rolls Royce is about $75.)
