Now, let me see if I get the new airline fuel tax right. Chicago`s mayor needs additional revenue. He arranges a tax on the airlines operating out of O`Hare. He gets his new revenue.

Ah, but the airlines are unhappy about this tax. They don`t want to pay the mayor any additional money. That would impact their profits, they say. So, the airlines begin to charge the passengers a surcharge to fly out of O`Hare.

The bottom line is this: Washington gets his money; the airlines`

profits aren`t hurt; we frequent fliers pay the whole tab. Furthermore, we traveling noncity people help pay for the mayor`s incompetence.
