— The White Sox put Ivan Calderon on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to last Friday. That`s when the outfielder slid into second base and suffered a badly sprained right ankle. ”It feels better today, but it`s still pretty swollen,” said trainer Herm Schneider.

— The Sox called up Kenny Williams, 23, to take Calderon`s place on the roster. Williams was hitting .269 with two homers and 14 RBIs for Triple-A Hawaii. He hit only .129 during a brief stay with the Sox last September.

— The Sox said all spring that a key to their season would be avoiding injuries. Calderon was the third player to be placed on the disabled list this year. ”Injuries are a part of the game,” Fregosi said.

— Gary Redus was named the American League`s Player of the Week Monday. He was 12-for-26 (.462) with three homers, two triples, a double and six runs batted in. He also scored nine runs and stole four bases. ”I guess they know I`m in the league,” said Redus, who was acquired this spring from Philadelphia for Joe Cowley.

— The Sox caught Milwaukee on the way up in April. Now they`re catching the Brewers on the way down. The Sox travel to Milwaukee Tuesday, when the Brewers will try to break an 11-game losing streak. Last month, the Brewers came to town and won their 13th straight game to open the season, tying a major league record. The Sox broke the streak the next day.

Pitchers for the series: Tuesday, Jose DeLeon (3-3) vs. Teddy Higuera

(4-2); Wednesday, Joel Davis (1-2) vs. Juan Nieves (2-1).
