Michigan Avenue shopkeepers pay the fifth largest annual rent in the U.S. when they fork over up to $175 a square foot for space, according to the Hirschfeld Cos., a New York real estate firm. But the priciest place to rent retail space is on Fifth Avenue in New York between 49th and 58th Streets, according to the firm. There, retailers pay up to $425 a square foot.
