Perusing your May 27 editorials, I noted with dismay the first two words of your ”Guns as the standard of law” editorial: ”Gun lovers.” Uh oh–a pejorative. Checking further, I discovered the phrase ”gun worshippers.”

Another pejorative!

The editorial addressed the proposition to eliminate the Firearms Owners Identification Act, stating that such action would ”make guns easily available to anyone, including juveniles, felons and mental patients.”

Where have you been for the 20-year history of this law? The kids, crooks and nuts have had guns right along, while honest citizens are required to comply with what amounts to a tax bill. Years ago, a reporter applied for, and received, a FOID for his 3-year-old daughter. That worked so well that he then obtained a card for his cocker spaniel, complete with photo! (So much fo the pretense of identity and records checking.)

Your comment ”the freedom to play with guns . . . ” is off the mark. No qualified citizen who desires to own a firearm should be denied that right because of bureaucratic (or editorial) paranoia.
