The Tribune (June 3) relates that Assistant Secretary of State Elliot Abrams admitted in his testimony before a joint congressional committee that he ”deliberately misled Congress on three occasions about his knowledge of foreign aid to Nicaraguan contras.”

And to compound this damning admission is his ludicrous excuse that ”he wasn`t authorized to tell the truth.”

President Nixon was forced out of office because of his involvement in a matter that was of purely political concern and in no way affected national security. Why is this dissembler allowed to remain as an assistant secretary of state? Or why hasn`t he the decency to resign?
