Shabby and neglected are two of the adjectives that describe the present unacceptable conditions of Chicago`s North Side parks, once the pride of the city and a showplace for tourists.
The astonishing deterioration of the parks, with unmowed grass, abundant weeds, unswept sidewalks and a general appearance of seediness, can only bring to mind a remembrance of their former loveliness.
Whatever could be said about Mr. Kelly`s army of patronage workers, they performed their jobs well, creating a park system that was maintained for the masses of people who used–and abused–it.
Mayor Washington`s own army of patronage workers, including the new superintendent, seems ill qualified and equipped to manage the parks, if their current condition can be a source of judgment.
