Dennis Rodman of the Detroit Pistons is sorry for saying Boston`s Larry Bird is overrated because he is white, but he wouldn`t say if he has changed his opinion. ”I regret what I said,” Rodman told the Dallas Morning News.

Former Bear offensive tackle Kline Gilbert, a captain on the 1956 Western Division champs who lost to the New York Giants in the NFL title game, died Sunday at University Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., at age 56. He was a starter for the Bears in 1953-57. In recent years, he had been an insurance salesman. Survivors include two sons and a daughter. . . . George Smith, an infielder with Detroit and Boston in the 1960s, is dead of cancer at age 49. In 1966, his only season as a regular, he hit .213 with 8 home runs in 128 games.
Patrick McEnroe, younger brother of John McEnroe–who withdrew from Wimbledon Monday because of back problems–was eliminated from the Wimbledon qualifying tournament by Rick Leach of the U.S. 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
