Catcher Jody Davis left Sunday`s game because of a bruised left ankle. He fouled a ball off it in the fifth inning and was removed for a pinch-runner in the sixth.
”He got a pretty good shot off the bat,” said trainer John Fierro.
”The main concern there in the front of the ankle is swelling. Knowing Jody, it`s a good possibility he`ll play tomorrow. We bandaged it up pretty well and we`ll try to control the swelling with ice.”
Lester Lancaster was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take the roster spot opened when Scott Sanderson was placed on the disabled list. Lancaster was 5-3 with a 3.22 earned run average in 15 games (six starts) at Iowa.
Jamie Moyer (7-4) will pitch Monday against Rick Reuschel (5-3).
Reserve catcher Jim Sundberg diffused a Pirates` rally in the sixth inning when he picked off Bobby Bonilla at first base.
”That was a mistake,” Pirates manager Jim Leyland said. ”In any park, you can`t let that happen, but especially here where a fly ball can go out and get you back in the game.”
Andre Dawson, who drove a run to tie a game for the 11th time, continues to play with a sore Achilles tendon.
”It`s definitely improving,” Fierro said. ”We made some modifications in his shoe. We did some therapy on it, stretching him. There is still a little discomfort, but for the most part it`s improving.”
The heat and humidity, combined with the 3-hour-34-minute game made for a trying day for players and fans.
”Today was one of the warmest days we`ve had,” said Keith Moreland.
”We all noticed it. It was really hanging over the ballpark. You really felt hot.”
David Martinez extended his hitting streak to five games with a pair of singles. He has five hits in his last eight at-bats.
Lee Smith, who earned his 19th save and leads the major leagues, made his 428th appearance as a Cub to tie Guy Bush for fourth place on the all-time list.
Cubs clubhouse man Yosh Kawano and his quick-reacting helpers prevented a third flooding of the locker room after Sunday`s game.
A torrential rainfall right after the game flooded the Cubs` dugout and sent a river of water down the runway towards the locker room.
”If we hadn`t been here, this place would have been ruined,” said Kawano.
Dwight Smith`s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth scored Rich Amaral with the winning run as the Pittsfield Cubs beat the Harrisburg Senators 3-2 in an Eastern League game Sunday.
Harrisburg took a 2-0 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by starting pitcher Rich Fauveur and a single by Tommy Gregg.
The Cubs tied the score in the eighth when Ray Thoma`s bases-loaded single drove in two runs.
In the ninth, Senators relief pitcher Brett Gideon (2-3) hit Amaral with a pitch to lead off the inning.
He stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Smith`s sacrifice fly to right.
Reliever Jeff Hirsch (1-0) pitched the ninth to earn the win.
