What a guy!

Just 24 hours after coming to downtown Chicago for medical treatment following a beaning, Andre Dawson returned to the area late Wednesday afternoon to fulfill an autograph session.

”We were pretty nervous about whether he`d make it,” said Mike Wisniewski, manager of the Cubs` all-sports souvenir store that opened recently at 445 N. Michigan Ave. ”When he went down, I started thinking who we could get as a substitute.

”His appearance had been plugged on TV quite a bit,” he added. ”I called Wrigley Field this morning, and he said he wanted to go through with it.”

Dawson didn`t disappoint hundreds of fans, who started lining up in front of the store more than an hour before his scheduled appearance.

The Cub slugger sat on the bench during Wednesday`s game against San Diego as a precaution, and quickly changed afterward to make the session. The stitches were visible, but he was his normal soft-spoken, polite self.

In fact, if he wished, Dawson had plenty to brag about because earlier in the day he was named to start on the National League All-Star team.
