The release of Oakland Athletics third baseman Ron Cey Wednesday meant the Cubs have to dig into their pockets to pay a larger chunk of the former Cubs` $950,000 base salary. According to a stipulation in the trade last February, the Cubs agreed to pay more than the original agreed-upon fee of $550,000 if Cey got released by the All-Star break.
Cubs reliever Dickie Noles plans to test his injured right wrist this weekend. Noles broke his wrist on June 30 in Montreal during a brawl with the Expos.
”They tell me it will hurt the most to throw a breaking pitch,” Noles said. ”But if I can`t throw a breaking pitch, I`m done.”
Probables for the rest of the series: Friday, Rick Sutcliffe (8-6) vs. Kelly Downs (8-4); Saturday, Greg Maddux (5-7) vs. Atlee Hammaker (4-7); and Sunday, Lester Lancaster (2-1) vs. Mike Krukow (1-6).
Saturday`s game will be the NBC Game of the Week.
