General Manager Larry Himes said he was ”frustrated” over his inability to make a trade during the All-Star break. Himes had talks with several teams concerning Richard Dotson and Floyd Bannister. The Sox want young talent, a commodity most teams want to keep.
”Most teams are looking to develop from within,” Himes said. ”They`re placing a high value on their system now. But the closer a team comes to winning a pennant, it might have to change its direction.”
Himes said there are no trades imminent. He reported ”no action” on the Bannister front, although revealing four teams are interested in the left-hander.
The Sox might be close to signing their No. 1 draft pick, pitcher Jack McDowell. Himes spoke with him over the weekend.
Bobby Thigpen rejoined the Sox Thursday and found out he`s back in the bullpen. Thigpen had gone to Hawaii to learn how to become a starter but had mixed results. ”You prefer to go where you`ve had some success, and for me, that`s been in the bullpen,” said Thigpen, who has developed a change-up since was last here.
