There was an item in a recent Tribune Friday section with the headline,
”And now you can eat subs in the submarine!” It went on to describe how the Museum of Science and Industry, hoping to add to its coffers, is offering an ”After Hours at the Museum” program, utilizing its various exhibits as sites for banquets and parties after the museum closes for the day.
The accompanying whimsical illustration showed people in coal miners`
hats desporting themselves on the deck of the captured German submarine U-505. The article gave the impression that the U-boat would be a fun place to hold a theme party. Perhaps the writer was unaware that the U-505 is a dedicated memorial to the thousands of American naval personnel who went down to unmarked graves in the sea during World War II. I hope that any group bent on frolicking in the museum after hours will be mindful of this fact when choosing a place for its revels.
