Jose DeLeon still was shaken, but at least he was in one piece after he went through a car accident Monday. DeLeon still is bothered by a sore neck and bruised jaw. He might not be able to pitch until the end of the week.

”I`m pretty lucky,” DeLeon said. ”I lost control of my car (in the rain). The car probably was totaled. Luckily, my wife and daughter weren`t hurt.”

Bob James threw on the side Tuesday, working from ”50 to 75 percent” of his ability, according to trainer Herm Schneider. ”I told him to shut it down, I didn`t want to overdo it,” Schneider said. James is suffering from an irritated tricep tendon, the same injury that sidelined him last year. ”This injury isn`t to the same degree,” Schneider said. ”He`s on the road to recovery.”

Ivan Calderon`s catch Monday was still a big subject of conversation Tuesday. Calderon climbed the left-field wall to rob Alan Trammell of a homer. Longtime Tiger coach Dick Tracewski said: ”In all my years here, I`ve never seen a catch like that.”

Manager Jim Fregosi, though, found Calderon`s defense lacking in the eighth inning. Calderon held the ball long enough to allow Lou Whitaker to go from first to third on a single to left. ”He has a tendency to hold the ball,” Fregosi said. ”The advance scouts see that and take advantage of it. I told him he`s going to have to get rid of the ball quicker.”
