Daryl Boston, the Opening Day center-fielder for the White Sox, learned he was being sent to Triple-A Hawaii after Wednesday night`s game. He will be replaced on the roster by catcher Ron Hassey, who comes off the disabled list Friday.
Boston wasn`t surprised by the demotion.
He was hitting only .232 with 8 homers and 20 RBIs. He has played sparingly of late and was hitless in his last 13 at-bats.
Still, he took the news hard.
”I want to be in the big leagues, no matter what,” Boston said. ”I had my chance and I didn`t do it. Hopefully, I`ll get another chance.”
Boston, 24, might not be that fortunate with the Sox. He was their No. 1 draft pick in 1981, but, despite several opportunities, he has yet to make an impact in the big leagues. He has failed to survive an entire year with the Sox.
