Dave LaPoint will make his second start for the Sox when they open a four-game series against Milwaukee Friday night at Comiskey Park.

Unfortunately for LaPoint, it`s also his second start against the Brewers in less than a week. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, the first six hitless, to lead the Sox to a 3-2 victory last Saturday. ”I don`t really like to face the same team twice in a week,” LaPoint said. ”But there`s not much I can do about it.”

Ozzie Guillen and Fred Manrique form the only Venezuelan double-play combination in the big leagues. However, they have vastly different personalities. Guillen is outgoing, Manrique reserved. It might be an element of their background. ”I`m from near Caracas, and he`s from Bolivar,” Guillen said. ”That`s like comparing New York to a little town in Texas.”

His teammates kid Manrique that he comes from the jungle, but he defends his hometown. ”It`s nice town,” he said. ”A lot of Americans live there.”

Manager Jim Fregosi on why he wants to keep three catchers– Carlton Fisk, Ron Hassey and Bill Lindsey: ”All three of them can fly. I don`t have to pinch-run for them.” He was joking, of course.

Hassey and Bob James come off the disabled list Friday. Daryl Boston already has been sent down to make room for Hassey. A pitcher will have to go when James is reactivated.

Jerry Bertolani, a shortstop at Class-A Daytona Beach, was named the organization`s Player of the Month for July, when he hit .342 with 10 doubles and 19 RBIs.
