Augie Garrido, who guided Fullerton State to two NCAA baseball titles during his 15 years at the school, is resigning to become coach at Illinois, it was reported Tuesday. Garrido told the Anaheim Bulletin, ”I`ll be taking that job.” The paper said Garrido would be introduced as the new Illinois coach at a press conference Wednesday. Garrido, 46, reportedly made $57,000 at Fullerton State, where his teams won the College Baseball World Series in 1979 and 1984. According to the paper, he`ll get a $70,000 base salary at Illinois, plus other perks that will raise his pay to $100,000 or more annually.
Los Angeles Clippers forward Michael Cage was arrested on two weapons violations after Los Angeles County sheriff`s deputies found a semiautomatic pistol and two loaded magazines in his car, police said. Cage, 25, was released on the two misdemeanor weapons violations after signing a notice to appear in court. . . . Quarterback Jeff Burger, who led Auburn to a 10-2 record last season, was declared ineligible by university officials because one of his coaches, former Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan, violated an NCAA rule by signing a property bond to free him from jail last month. Sullivan has been barred from all off-campus athletic activities such as evaluation, recruiting and public speaking for 90 days. He signed the $700 bond when Burger was arrested after a fight July 14 in a restaurant parking lot. Burger was charged with public intoxication and carrying a concealed weapon.
The U.S. attorney`s office in Tampa intends to put Denny McLain on trial again if necessary, said Terry Zitek, chief of the criminal division. There`s nothing in the opinion of the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, which last Friday threw out McLain`s convictions on drug and racketeering charges, ”that says we shouldn`t retry the case,” Zitek said. Meanwhile, McLain`s attorney, Arnold Levine, said he couldn`t afford to represent the former pitching star at a second trial.
