The recent column by Stephen Chapman is an example of timely editorial excellence. This has been a summer for exposing reality to the American public. First, the Ollie North testimony and now Mr. Chapman`s column.
It is easy to second guess a decision of the magnitude of dropping an atomic bomb with only a fragment of the facts. But when so many human lives hang in the balance, the ”Ban the Bomb” mentality is simply not correct.
Maybe this column should be run every Aug. 6, perhaps with a side story or two, including one on the Japanese kamikaze suicide pilots. As I understand it, only half of them were used. The remaining half of this very successful weapon was saved for defense of the homeland and, because the Japanese surrendered, these pilots` lives were spared. Maybe one or two of these men could be found and interviewed, giving them a chance to comment on the additional 42 years that the American use of nuclear weapons has added to their lives.
