Auburn quarterback Jeff Burger`s academic suspension has been lifted by Warren Brandt, the school`s vice president of academic affairs, removing one of two hurdles for Burger playing his senior season.
He also has been ruled ineligible by Auburn officials and reported to the NCAA because quaterback coach Pat Sullivan bailed Burger out of jail after a fight. An academic honesty committee voted last week to suspend Burger for two quarters for allegedly plagiarizing a class report.
Burger appealed that decision to Brandt, who said at the time he had never overturned a vote by the academic honesty committee.
Whether Soviet basketball star Arvidas Sabonis ever plays for the National Basketball Association`s Portland Trail Blazers probably depends on the International Basketball Federation, according to Soviet coach Alexander Gomelsky. Sabonis is rehabilitating a torn right Achilles` tendon. The International Basketball Federation is expected to decide next fall whether to make basketball an open sport for the 1992 Olympics. If it votes to open the doors, the 7-foot-2-inch center would be able to play for the Blazers without jeopardizing his amateur status.
”But it must be stipulated,” Gomelsky said, ”that he will play for the Soviet team in all international competitions, even if he is playing as a professional.”
