Ivan Calderon had to be pulled from Saturday`s game with a sore right shoulder after he struck out in the first inning. He was replaced in right field by Kenny Williams.

Manager Jim Fregosi was impressed with Jesse Barfield`s decision to sacrifice on his own during the fourth inning of Friday`s game. Barfield hadn`t laid down a sacrifice bunt since July, 1984. ”That was a very unselfish play,”

Fregosi said. ”He`s struggling with the bat. He`s doing what he can to help the team. That`s the kind of baseball you have to play to win a pennant.”

The Sox`s Triple-A team in Hawaii will hold a Joe De Sa day Sunday. De Sa, a native of Hawaii who played briefly for the Sox in 1985, was killed in a car accident in Puerto Rico last December. The Sox are flying De Sa`s wife, Margarita, and his son, Joe Jr., from the Dominican Republic to Hawaii in an effort to help raise money for the family. The Sox also will make a significant contribution.

The Blue Jays` father-son day brought out some of the best lines in much-traveled Sox pitcher Dave LaPoint. ”My kid`s only 3 1/2, and he`s already been in six father-son games,” LaPoint said. ”Most kids wear Carters. Mine wears Rawlings.”

Bill Long (6-6) returns to the starting rotation Sunday when he meets Jimmy Key (14-6) in the series finale.

Some of the Blue Jays tipped their hat to Richard Dotson, but said they had seen better peformances this season.

”I`m not taking anything away from Dotson,” second baseman Garth Iorg said. ”But guys have pitched better against us and we`ve scored five or six runs. We`re a better team than that. We just weren`t swinging the bats.”

”I thought we were going to come back,” said loser Jim Clancy. ”I always feel that way, but today we didn`t.”
