Mike Tyson will make the first defense of his unified heavyweight championship Oct. 16 against 1984 Olympic champion and No. 1-ranked challenger Tyrell Biggs in Atlantic City. The 15-round bout will be televised by HBO. Tyson said he would face Michael Spinks, if Spinks fought Tony Tucker and won. . . . Doug DeWitt won a 10-round unanimous decision over Chicagoan Lenny LaPaglia in a middleweight bout in Atlantic City.

World-record runner Said Aouita will skip Wednesday`s international meet in Zurich because of an inflamed nerve in his left left and could miss the World Championships in Rome. He hasn`t trained in a week.

National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern has voided the trade that sent guard Jim Paxson from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Cleveland Cavaliers for forward Keith Lee because Lee flunked his physical with Portland. The decision marked the first time a dispute trade had been ruled on by the commissioner. The last canceled trade was San Antonio`s attempt to send John Shumate to Seattle in 1980.

A charge of terroristic threatening against Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird has been dismissed. District Judge Charles Anderson said he dismissed the charges against Bird, his brother, Mark Bird, and his sister, Linda Campbell, because the prosecuting witness, Benjamin Campbell, had advised the Jefferson County (Ky.) attorney`s office he wanted the case dropped. The Campbells are getting a divorce.

Denver Nuggets forward Bill Hanzlik is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday for a herniated disc, his second operation in a month. He had emergency surgery July 20 to remove an inflamed appendix. . . . Former Wisconsin center J.J. Weber won`t be playing this season with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to coach Del Harris. ”J.J. is going to play in Europe this year,” Harris said. He said he believed Weber had received offers from teams in Turkey, Italy and France.

Former All-Stater Jon Gustafsson of Buffalo Grove has suffered a broken fibula in his right leg. The freshman nose tackle will be out a minimum of six to eight weeks and probably will be redshirted by Illinois. . . . Auburn quarterback Jeff Burger, declared ineligible by the school because assistant coach Pat Sullivan bailed him out of jail, has had his playing status restored by the NCAA. The decision came on the heels of a university ruling in an academic case that cleared the way for Burger to complete his college career. But Gregory Jeane, chairman of an academic honesty committee that recommended Burger be suspended for the fall and winter quarters because of plagarism, said he was upset the suspension was lifted and has asked to address the faculty Oct. 6.

An East German team broke the world record in the women`s 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the European Championships in Strasbourg, France. The team of Manuela Stellmach, Astrid Strauss, Anke Mohring and Heike Friedrich was timed in 7 minutes 55.47 seconds, breaking the mark of 7:59.33 set at the 1986 World Championships in Madrid by another East German team. Anders Holmertz beat world record-holder Michael Gross in the 200 freestyle. His time was 1:48.44.

Charlotte West has been named interim athletic director at Southern Illinois, succeeding Jim Livengood who is resigning to become athletic director at Washington State.

Payne Stewart and Isao Aoki shot an 11-under-par 61 to win the Fred Meyer Challenge, a 36-hole, best-ball tournament in Portland, Ore. They finished at 127. Peter Jacobsen and Curtis Strange were second at 129.

Paul Annacone had 10 aces to upset No. 5-seeded John McEnroe 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in the first round of the Assocation of Tennis Professionals Championship in Mason, Ohio. McEnroe suffered a strained back midway through the first set. No. 6 Henri Leconte lost to Jonathan Canter 6-3, 7-5. No. 2 Stefan Edberg beat Jimmy Arias 6-4, 6-4. Boris Becker and Jimmy Connors each needed three sets. Becker beat Marcel Freeman 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Connors defeated Jay Berger 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. . . . Jeff Tarango beat Greg Holmes 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the Winnetka Pro Tennis Classic. Holmes had beaten Connors in the Volvo International. Tarango will play Mike Morrison, who beat Larry Stefankik 6-4, 6-4 Monday. . . . Fourth-seeded Helena Sukova, 10th-seeded Sylvia Hanika, No. 13 Gigi Fernandez and 14th-seeded Robin White lost in the Player`s Challenge in Toronto. Sukova lost 6-3, 6-1 to Anne Minter. Hanika was beaten 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 by Beverly Bowes. Unseeded Eva Pfaff defeated White 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, and Fernandez retired from her match against Betsy Nagelsen because of a sprained big toe on her left foot. Nagelsen had won the first set 7-6 (7-3). Rosalyn Fairbank beat Claudia Porwik 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
