Carl Lewis has decided not to run the 200 meters at the World Track and Field Championships in Rome this weekend so he can concentrate on beating Canada`s Ben Johnson in the 100 meters, considered one of the highlights of the championships. ”There has been a lot of talk about this race,” said Lewis. ”Johnson says he can run in 9.85. He says he`ll win. I can only say it`s time to stop talking and get into action. The track will tell the truth.”
Australian Dean Woods set a world record during qualifying heats for the amateurs` 4,000-meter individual pursuit race at the World Cycling
Championships in Vienna, beating reigning world champion Viacheslav Yekimov of the Soviet Union. Woods was timed in 4 minutes 27.11 seconds, Yekimov in 4:27.65. Italian Claudio Golinelli set another world record in a preliminary run for the professionals` sprint with a time of :10.587, bettering the 26-year-old record held by Switzerland`s Oskar Plattner (10.99).
Kathie Wickstrand-McIntosh, who directed the women`s swimming program the last two years at Purdue, was named women`s swim coach at Northwestern, replacing Pat Barry, who will continue as the men`s coach and will also serve as NU`s aquatics director.
