Kannard Johnson, the Cleveland Cavaliers` second-round pick in the last NBA draft, is taking steps toward playing in Europe this season, according to a report in the Cleveland Plain Deeler. An Italian basketball team has offered Johnson, a 6-9 forward, $15,000 to play three weeks in a European tournament. ”Right now, I feel he will go,” said Reggie Turner, Johnson`s agent.

”And once he gets there, I am sure they will put heavy pressure on him to stay. With perks, such as a car and a place to stay, the deal in Italy amounts to about $150,000.” He could expect to sign for about $100,000 with the Cavs. When his days guarding NBA opponents are over, Boston Celtics guard Sam Vincent will take on insects. He said he`ll open a pest control company in Lansing next week. ”I discussed it with business folks here in Lansing and got thumbs up,” he said. ”They said it was a sound idea. There`s an opportunity here for pest control.”

Right wing Peter Sundstrom will return to the NHL this season with the Washington Capitals, who got him from the New York Rangers for a draft choice. Sundstrom, 25, played three years for the Rangers, then returned to Sweden last season because he was unhappy with coach Ted Sator. Sundstrom played in 206 games with the Rangers, scoring 48 goals with 62 assists for 110 points.

Guard Troy Lewis, the leading scorer for the Purdue basketball team the past two seasons, broke a bone in his left foot during a pickup game and will be unable to practice for six to eight weeks.
